Starbucks' Red Cup Rebellion Continues To Expand To More Cities As It Approaches The One Month Mark – CoffeeTalk
Hundreds of new union baristas across 34 cities have walked out of their jobs in solidarity with an escalating strike that began last month, according to the workers’ union of Starbucks. Initially launched on Red Cup Day, November 13, at 65 stores, the strike has expanded significantly to over 180 stores in more than 130 cities, marking it as potentially the largest strike in the company’s history.
Zarian Pouncy, a veteran barista with 12 years’ experience in Las Vegas, articulated the union’s demands for the cessation of illegal union busting practices by Starbucks, alongside the need for a fair contract that ensures fair wages, predictable hours, and workplace protections. He emphasized the collective resolve of baristas and their supporters, declaring, “No Contract, No Coffee!”
Additionally, it was disclosed that Starbucks has agreed to a settlement of $38.9 million with New York City due to repeated violations of a local law that mandates predictable scheduling for fast-food workers, exceeding half a million infractions over a three-year period. This settlement entails the disbursement of $35.5 million to more than 15,000 workers along with $3.4 million allocated for penalties and associated costs, as detailed in a settlement agreement announced on November 26.
