Grounds for Health Celebrates 30 Years of Preventing Cervical Cancer, Powered by the Coffee Industry – CoffeeTalk
[WILLISTON, VT]: Grounds for Health, the nonprofit bringing cervical cancer prevention programs to women in coffee-growing communities, celebrated its 30th anniversary by acknowledging its deep ties to the coffee industry since 1996. The lively event brought together individuals and companies passionate about the critical role women play in coffee production and dedicated to improving women’s health.
“Few nonprofits reach 30 years of impact in the communities they serve. Grounds for Health exists today because of the generosity and commitment of the coffee industry to the health and wellbeing of women in coffee-growing communities.”
–Dan Cox, Grounds for Health Co-Founder and Board Member
Coffee Connections
The event, held in September at Royal Coffee’s The Crown venue in Oakland, brought together dozens of supporters including Balzac Bros, Mother Parker’s Tea & Coffee, Peet’s Coffee, Philz, and others. Grounds for Health was represented by co-founder Dan Cox, Coffee Enterprises, board members, and senior staff.
“We are proud supporters of Grounds for Health, whose focus on women’s health and cancer prevention echoes our own commitment to responsible sourcing, sustainable practices, and community wellness.”
–Minni Forman, Peet’s Coffee
The Grounds for Health Model
Since 1996, Grounds for Health has operated in multiple countries across Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa, screening over 266,144 and treating 22,127 women for cervical cancer. They partner with local health ministries and coffee cooperatives to deliver services directly to women, and train local clinicians and community health promoters, so quality care continues long after a campaign ends.
What’s Next
Thirty years represents an entire generation of women protected against a devastating – yet preventable – disease. Young women in coffee-growing communities today deserve the same access to quality care. Grounds for Health will continue building on its mission by expanding its existing program in Ethiopia, and plans to launch in Guatemala in 2027. Stay tuned for details – Grounds for Health’s Annual Appeal launches on Giving Tuesday, December 1st.
