Austin Cafes Begin Banning Laptops, Sparking Mixed Reactions – CoffeeTalk
Austin’s work-from-home culture has influenced local coffee shops and restaurants, leading to the implementation of various laptop policies that have elicited mixed reactions from the community. Prominent among these is Swedish Hill, a bakery chain that banned laptops at its South First Street location in August 2025, designating its tables for dining and conversation only. Some customers welcomed this change, arguing that it improved the restaurant’s atmosphere, while others expressed frustration, questioning where remote workers could go to work efficiently.
For example, on Reddit, users reacted to the ban with a range of opinions, some expressing relief at the removal of laptop users who occupy seating for long periods, and others lamenting the restriction. Similarly, Better Half Coffee and Cocktails designates certain booth areas as no-laptop zones but allows their use in other spaces to cater to both diners and remote workers. Reviews on Better Half reveal a division among patrons, with some appreciating the restriction for ensuring available seating, while others pointed out accessibility issues for individuals needing specific seating arrangements.
Community Garden, another café in East Austin, has a unique policy allowing laptop use only during designated hours on weekdays, prioritizing social engagement during weekends. In contrast, Bennu Coffee has introduced a system where paying customers receive WiFi codes with three-hour limits to balance workspace and customer turnover.
The Texas Restaurant Association acknowledges that while not widespread, such no-laptop policies reflect individual businesses’ efforts to manage space and foster social interaction, especially during peak times. They advocate for clear communication regarding these policies to create an inclusive environment for all patrons.
