TORONTO, ON — The Canadian Barista Institute, which has trained coffee professionals for more than a decade, operates hands-on coffee training labs in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montréal, delivering barista and business programs against one shared curriculum, with coffee roasting instruction at the Vancouver lab. Every course at the Montréal lab is available in French, and the two-day business program can also be taken online in French, putting it within reach of operators anywhere in Québec and francophone Canada who can’t travel to a lab.

The classroom itself does work no manual can. Each course puts a small group in one room — people opening cafés, people running roasteries, people still deciding whether to enter the industry at all — and the discussion that comes out of that mix runs closer to a think tank than a lecture. Students pressure-test each other’s assumptions on menu, equipment, location and margin, with the instructor pushing from the front. It is demanding, and it is meant to be.

Graduates leave with the practical skills to open a business or step behind a bar — but they also leave having answered a harder question about whether this industry genuinely suits them.
