Germany Overtook The United States As Top Buyer Of Brazilian Coffee In 2025 – CoffeeTalk
Germany surpassed the United States to become the world’s largest importer of Brazilian coffee in 2025, seizing a market share of 13.5% of Brazil’s total coffee exports with imports of 5.4 million 60-kilogram bags. This change occurred as the US, historically Brazil’s top customer, dropped to second place with imports of 5.3 million bags, representing a 33% decrease from the previous year, primarily due to the imposition of temporary import tariffs reaching 50% by President Donald Trump. The tariffs were a response to political tensions linked to former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who has since been convicted and sentenced to prison.
During the particularly high tariff period from early August to late November, shipments to the US plummeted by 55%. After experiencing rising food prices, the US rolled back these tariffs in November. Despite Brazil exporting a total of 40 million bags of coffee last year—a decline of about 20% from the previous year—export revenues soared by 24% to a record $15.5 billion. Cecafé’s head, Márcio Ferreira, indicated that the reduced shipments were also due to lower stockpiles following a record year and weather-related losses, while global price increases compensated for the reduced volume.
Brazil maintains its status as the only coffee-producing nation exporting to over 120 countries and holds more than one-third of the global coffee market. Following Germany and the US, other significant importers of Brazilian coffee include Italy, Japan, and Belgium.
