Starbucks Finalizes Deal With Boyu Capital To Take Over Starbucks Operations In China – CoffeeTalk
The joint venture between Starbucks and Boyu Capital regarding the ownership of Starbucks’ Chinese retail operations has officially concluded. Initially announced in November, this venture will oversee approximately 8,000 company-operating coffeehouses, which are set to transition to a licensed operating model. The partnership signifies a shared long-term goal of expanding to as many as 20,000 locations in the future.
Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol underscores that this transaction embodies the company’s ongoing confidence in China as a vital growth market. He notes that the collaboration is aimed at enhancing the brand’s capacity to broaden its presence and relevance in the region. Niccol expresses that “China remains one of the most exciting long-term opportunities for Starbucks,” emphasizing that finalizing this partnership with Boyu will enable the company to grow with intentionality and discipline.
The partnership aims to leverage Starbucks’ established global brand alongside Boyu’s extensive local expertise, which is expected to enable the business to better serve customers, access more cities, and reinforce its leadership in a rapidly changing market landscape.
With the deal now finalized, Starbucks and Boyu Capital are entering the operational phase of the venture. Alex Wong, a Partner at Boyu Capital, expresses pride in supporting Starbucks’ next growth chapter in China and highlights the commitment to enhancing the brand’s presence and relevance over the long term.
According to the terms of the agreement, Boyu Capital-managed funds now hold a 60% stake in Starbucks’ China retail operations, while Starbucks retains a 40% ownership interest along with ownership of the brand and its intellectual property within the joint venture. This shift occurs within a competitive environment where local companies such as Luckin Coffee and Cotti Coffee are rapidly increasing their market share in China.
Starbucks, which traditionally led the coffee chain market in the region with approximately 8,000 locations, faces fierce competition from Luckin Coffee, which boasts over 31,000 locations worldwide, predominantly in China. Meanwhile, Cotti Coffee has expanded its operations to over 18,000 global locations, with more than 16,000 situated in China.
