Africa's Largest Supermarket Group Shoprite Acquires South Africa's Largest Specialty Coffee Chain Vida e Caffè – CoffeeTalk
Shoprite, Africa’s largest supermarket group, has strategically expanded its portfolio by acquiring the popular coffee chain, Vida e Caffè, which operates over 400 outlets, and securing a controlling interest in R&A Cellular, a payments company focused on South Africa’s informal retail market. The total value of these acquisitions is estimated at approximately $62 million (R1 billion), as reported by Reuters, although Shoprite has not disclosed the specific financial details for each entity.
Vida e Caffè, founded in Cape Town in 2001, is recognized as South Africa’s largest specialty coffee chain, boasting cafes in high-traffic locations such as shopping centers and airports. This acquisition not only enhances Shoprite’s presence in the coffee and convenience sector but also captures frequent purchases that occur outside the conventional supermarket context. According to Shoprite’s CEO, Pieter Engelbrecht, this move aims to fortify the group’s competitive stance in both coffee and convenience retail.
In parallel, R&A Cellular operates point-of-sale devices that enable informal traders to offer various digital services such as electricity sales and mobile communication products. With this majority acquisition, completed on August 14 after receiving regulatory approval, Shoprite aims to extend its service offerings into townships and rural areas where establishing full supermarkets may not be viable economically. The partnership has previously allowed R&A to facilitate transactions involving Shoprite’s vouchers, marking an integration that stands to benefit both companies.
Historically, Shoprite began as a small grocery chain in the Western Cape in 1979 and has evolved into Africa’s retail giant through a series of acquisitions and expansion efforts. The company’s decision to move beyond traditional grocery sales with the Vida and R&A acquisitions indicates a progressive strategy targeting growth within its strongest market, South Africa, rather than simply increasing the number of supermarkets.
Shoprite’s latest financial report for the 52 weeks ending on June 28 reveals a sales growth of 7.2%, totaling approximately $16.8 billion (R270.8 billion). These figures reflect the company’s success in attracting more customers and boosting sales volumes, rather than relying on substantial price increases, despite a selling-price inflation rate of 0.8%. Additionally, revenue from value-added services, including financial transaction commissions, rose by 9.6% to R1.37 billion, which underscores the rationale behind acquiring R&A Cellular. Ultimately, while Vida and R&A Cellular cater to different consumer needs, both acquisitions enable Shoprite to diversify its revenue streams and expand its operational footprint beyond the conventional supermarket model.
