Heineken Looks to Coffee Industry for New CEO Pick – CoffeeTalk
Heineken has appointed Rafael Oliveira as its new chair and CEO, marking the first time the Dutch brewer has selected an outsider for this role. Oliveira, who previously served as CEO of JDE Peet’s, will assume his position on October 1 for a tenure of four years. This decision aims to accelerate the company’s 2030 strategic plan, known as EverGreen 2030, which focuses on enhancing growth, productivity, and modernizing production processes.
The supervisory board praised Oliveira for his strategic vision, operational expertise, and financial acumen, which contributed to his unanimous selection after a rigorous global search. Heineken’s previous CEO, Dolf van den Brink, had resigned earlier in the year, leaving a gap in leadership since January.
Oliveira is now responsible for implementing significant changes, including the execution of 6,000 job cuts intended to revive sales amidst anticipated declines in global beer demand. His appointment aligns with trends among brewers like Diageo and Remy Cointreau, who have also opted for new external leadership to rejuvenate corporate strategies.
Despite Oliveira’s extensive background in the beverages industry, analysts express concerns regarding his lack of experience in the alcohol sector, emphasizing that he will need to prove his capability as a newcomer to this specific market. He is optimistic about Heineken’s future, asserting that the 2030 strategy will serve as a strong foundation for continued growth and improved productivity, ultimately aiming to resonate with consumers globally.
