Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, has announced significant progress in the country’s coffee production, doubling its annual output to 1 million tonnes over the past five years. The country’s coffee sector’s revenues in 2016 exceeded US$1.4 billion, and this year, the government aims to set an ambitious target of US$2 billion. Modern irrigation systems and mechanised harvesting methods have increased productivity, achieving yields of up to 60 quintals per hectare. These achievements highlight Ethiopia’s ambition to develop the coffee industry and increase its global market share.
