Middletown, R.I. – Custom House Coffee wins Best Coffee Shop 2026, Newport County, for at least the tenth time, earning the top spot by the readers of Rhode Island Monthly magazine. This venerable coffeehouse was established in Middletown in 2002, and during the past 24 years has consistently won Best Coffee awards from numerous publications, including Newport Life magazine, Yankee Magazine, and Newport Mercury.

Custom House Coffee keeps winning awards by roasting small batches of coffee every day to keep it as fresh as possible for its many wholesale and retail customers. “We successfully compete with local roaster-retailer chains, with our single location, by never compromising on quality and freshness,” says founder Bob Mastin. “Most of our wholesale accounts are very successful, busy cafes that serve only the best products, across the board. We are always the go-to place for serious coffee lovers.”

Custom House Coffee keeps up with demand with its two Diedrich drum roasters, roasting nearly 100,000 pounds a year. “Although we have almost maxed out retail due to parking limitations, there is plenty of room to grow in mail order and wholesale, which is where we are concentrating now,” says Mastin. In fact, the company has gradually taken over most of the multiple-unit commercial complex of some 18,000 square feet that Mastin built in the early 1980s. “We have taken over units here for our main production kitchen, the roastery, a green bean warehouse, and storage space,” says Mastin.
