China has become the world leader in coffee shops, surpassing the United States as of last year. This growth is attributed to the rapid evolution of coffee culture within the country, driven by increased consumption among its citizens. Coffee consumption per person in China has increased fourfold from 2010 to 2022, transforming the coffee shop market by 58% over the past year, reaching nearly 50,000 establishments. The market growth reflects changing consumer preferences, particularly among young people, with analysts highlighting the potential for both domestic and international coffee brands.
Luckin Coffee and Cotti Coffee have been leading the charge with impressive expansions, with Luckin Coffee opening over 5,000 new stores and Starbucks adding 785 new locations. Despite competition, the expansion shows no signs of slowing, with coffee consumption expected to continue rising. Surveys reveal that over 90% of Chinese coffee drinkers enjoy hot coffee weekly, with 64% opting for iced coffee at least once weekly.
Shanghai, with over 9,500 cafes, exemplifies the vibrant coffee scene, with over 90% of Chinese coffee drinkers enjoying hot coffee weekly. The demand for coffee is not just growing, but also reflecting broader consumer upgrading trends as taste shifts from traditional beverages to coffee, particularly among younger consumers.
