Research Delves into Ant Behaviors that May Help with Coffee Pest Control – CoffeeTalk

Ants play a crucial role in controlling coffee pests, particularly coffee berry borers. Jonathan “Jonno” Morris, during his graduate studies at the University of Michigan, discovered that small ant species not only prey on these pests but also utilize the habitats vacated by them for reproduction. This observation marks a significant finding in understanding ant behaviors and their ecological roles. Large ants are known to consume berry borers, impeding their colonization of coffee plants, while small ants excavate the pests from coffee fruits. Morris noted that this dual role of ants in pest control enhances their population fitness and supports greater ant diversity on coffee plants. His research, which began in 2016 at a Chiapas, Mexico research station, involved collecting samples of coffee berries previously infested by borers and later confirmed these small ants’ reproductive behavior within the berries.
