Starbucks is implementing a comprehensive strategy to minimize its environmental impact across its global coffee shop operations, with the goal of achieving significant changes by 2030. This initiative falls under the Starbucks Global Impact Report FY2025 and is driven by the “Back to Starbucks” strategy, which emphasizes sustainability in coffee sourcing, community relations, and environmental stewardship.

The company has outlined specific objectives aimed at improving packaging, energy consumption, waste management, and raw material sourcing. Key targets include making all customer-facing packaging reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2030, cutting virgin plastic use by 5% compared to 2019, incorporating 25% recycled content into packaging, and ensuring all locations source renewable electricity.

Starbucks has seen a notable increase in the use of reusable containers, with a 77% rise in beverages served in such cups during fiscal year 2025. Initiatives include offering ceramic mugs, accepting personal cups, and running returnable cup pilot programs in over 20 markets. The redesign of packaging aims to reduce plastic usage, successfully implementing cups with 10-20% less plastic for cold beverages and including recycled materials in hot beverage cups.

The waste management strategy has also improved, with waste diversion rates increasing from 28% in 2019 to 40% in 2025, and some programs achieving up to 80% waste diversion in areas with suitable infrastructure. Investments in recycling initiatives and partnerships with entities like the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have bolstered these efforts.

In energy consumption, Starbucks claims to meet 100% of its electricity needs in select countries through renewable sources, investing over $325 million in solar projects and expanding electric vehicle charging stations across the U.S.

Starbucks has also certified over 13,000 stores under internal environmental standards, reflecting commitments to energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, and operational excellence. Despite these advancements, the company recognizes ongoing challenges, particularly concerning its supply chain’s environmental footprint and the evolving regulatory landscape regarding greenhouse gas emissions. Overall, Starbucks aims for transformative changes that align its operational decisions with sustainability goals, reinforcing its commitment to reducing the ecological impact of coffee consumption globally.
