The Woman Running a Small-Scale At-Home Specialty Coffee Roasting Business by Appointment Only – CoffeeTalk

Rochester resident Danielle Morrison has received approval from the city’s Zoning Board of Adjustment on July 8 to operate a home-based coffee roasting business named Beans and Blossoms. Residing at 42 B Magic Ave. in a multifamily dwelling alongside her husband David, Morrison plans to initially run the business part-time while managing their full-time jobs. This small-scale venture will facilitate coffee sales by appointment only, allowing clients to pick up their orders or opt for mail delivery.

Morrison, who recently developed an interest in coffee roasting inspired by La Mulita coffee shop in Rye, has gained insights through literature and videos on the craft. She conducted taste tests within a coffee community in the Lakes Region, reflecting her commitment to engage with fellow coffee enthusiasts. Currently, her operations will be limited to roasting to order, ensuring freshness for customers. Notably, she has begun supplying a local bee farm with six pounds of coffee weekly.

Beans & Blossoms LLC is registered under New Hampshire law, with valid standing since March 19, 2024. Morrison emphasizes the uniqueness of her products, specifically roasting single-origin specialty coffee in small batches—an approach that allows the distinct characteristics of each coffee type to shine through, such as hints of strawberry and honey in her Organic Ethiopian blend. Local sales are prioritized as she aims to cultivate community support for small roasters.

While Morrison will operate with a roaster capable of handling two pounds at a time, she has assured compliance regarding safety, having received clearance from the Fire Department, and ensuring the machine is vented to the outside to eliminate any hazardous fumes. The Zoning Board, recognizing that Morrison met the criteria for a special exception, approved her endeavor, noting that it would have minimal impact on the neighborhood. Board member Raymond Wayman expressed confidence in the appropriateness of the location, highlighting that the business poses no visual or auditory disturbances. Additionally, Board chair Lawrence Spector advised that if Morrison’s business flourishes and she seeks to expand, she would need to present her plans again to the board.
