Luckin, Mixue, Blue Bottle Coffee… China is Increasingly Pushing into American Coffee Culture – CoffeeTalk

Chinese companies are increasingly entering U.S. markets, particularly in the coffee sector, as demonstrated by Centurium Capital’s acquisition of Blue Bottle Coffee, a California-based specialty chain previously owned by Nestle. This acquisition is part of a larger strategy by Luckin Coffee, a prominent Chinese coffee chain with over 31,000 global locations and a fierce competitor to Starbucks, to expand its footprint in the U.S. Luckin Coffee previously settled fraud charges with the SEC in 2020 for fabricating over $300 million in retail sales, leading to its delisting from Nasdaq. However, the company has since reopened U.S. locations, offering low-cost, cashless coffee services.

In contrast, Blue Bottle Coffee is known for its premium pricing and stylish cafes, aligning with a different market segment. The nature of this acquisition raises questions about future strategy, as neither Centurium nor Luckin has provided comments on their plans for Blue Bottle. Analysts suggest that this move may be aimed at securing U.S. investor interest amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions, with a focus on reestablishing Luckin’s presence in U.S. capital markets.

Analyst Longdley Zephirin notes that despite Blue Bottle being a smaller target rather than larger consumer brands, its acquisition holds significant strategic and political implications. However, he expresses skepticism about investing in Luckin due to existing geopolitical risks and other financial challenges within rapidly expanding Chinese coffee companies, which often resort to discounts that threaten profitability due to escalating price competition. For Luckin’s shares to appeal to investors, substantial evidence of profitability will be necessary.
