How Starbucks Angered Customers En Masse With New Rewards Program Rollout – CoffeeTalk

Starbucks has launched a reimagined Rewards program, marking a significant change in its loyalty structure with the introduction of three membership tiers: Green, Gold, and Reserve. The new tiers aim to enhance customer experience by allowing members to earn Stars more quickly, enjoy additional perks, and have more control over Star expiration.

Despite the program’s improvements, customer backlash has emerged, primarily from those who previously held Gold status. The confusion stems from Starbucks’ previous decision in 2019 to eliminate tiered statuses but still allowing customers to retain and use their Gold Cards, leading many to believe they still had Gold status. This perception persisted for seven years until the recent announcement, which clarified that membership status would now depend on spending behavior in 2025, leaving many longtime cardholders feeling demoted to Green status.

Under the revamped system, Green members earn 1 Star per dollar spent and can maintain Star validity with monthly activity while enjoying a complimentary drink modification monthly. In contrast, Gold members who accumulate 500 Stars annually (equivalent to spending approximately $500) benefit from a 1.2x earning rate with Stars that never expire. While the outlined perks for Green members are similar or even superior to previous benefits, the abrupt realization of losing Gold status has generated disappointment among customers who had long associated their identity with the Gold Card.
