Indonesia's Goal To Establish Itself As A Global Coffee Hub – CoffeeTalk
Indonesia is making strides to establish itself as a global coffee hub, as articulated by Trade Minister Budi Santoso on Monday. This initiative stems from a proposal by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), which believes Indonesia, being a major coffee producer, should exert more influence on global coffee prices. During the inauguration of the Asian Trade, Tourism, and Economics Council (ATTEC) office in Jakarta, Santoso affirmed the government’s commitment to making Indonesia a significant coffee center.
However, he cautioned that the proposition to alter global coffee pricing mechanisms would be approached with care, given the established market norms. He emphasized the necessity of developing this concept in collaboration with international organizations, coffee-consuming nations, and other coffee-producing countries. The minister recognized that altering the global coffee price-setting landscape is a gradual process.
As a foundational step, Indonesia plans to bolster its partnerships with international coffee forums, aiming to enhance its credibility and influence in the coffee market. This initiative is expected to improve Indonesia’s position within the global coffee supply chain, thereby increasing the competitiveness of its coffee products. Santoso expressed optimism that, through such efforts, Indonesian coffees will achieve greater international recognition, given the diverse varieties available and the nation’s standing as a significant producer.
Kadin Chairman Anindya Bakrie supported this vision, highlighting Indonesia’s capacity as the third-largest coffee producer globally, trailing only Brazil and Colombia. He pointed out the unique varieties Indonesia offers, such as arabica, robusta, and luwak coffee, and shared the aspiration for Indonesia to eventually become the central hub for coffee trading.
