While Businesses who Directly Paid Tariffs May Seek Refunds, Coffee Shops Who Indirectly Paid for the Surging Cost of Coffee May Miss Out – CoffeeTalk

Businesses affected by tariffs deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court can seek refunds, but the process is more complicated than anticipated. Quinn Duncan, a customer at Nameless Coffee Company, voiced concerns about the struggles of small businesses, emphasizing the impact of rising gas prices and the need for financial support for local enterprises. Despite hopes for refunds benefiting coffee shops like Nameless Coffee, most will not directly receive these refunds; instead, their importers, from whom they acquire products, will profit from the refunds.

Andrew Gough, owner of Reverie Coffee Roasters, expressed disappointment regarding the refunds, highlighting that his business has faced unprecedented coffee prices— the highest in sixty years. He articulated concerns that financial relief might not reach them directly. Gough reported that the tariffs have placed significant strain on his business, costing nearly $16,000 since May of the previous year, stressing that even a couple thousand dollars could be pivotal for their survival.

To facilitate the refund process, businesses eligible to apply must submit claims through a new filing portal introduced by the Trump administration, signaling an attempt to address the financial challenges posed by long-standing tariffs. However, skepticism remains about whether this relief will effectively trickle down to small business owners such as Gough, who continue to navigate an increasingly difficult economic landscape.
