Starbucks Shuts Down Another Seattle Store in Continuing Trend – CoffeeTalk

Starbucks has recently closed its downtown store located at 999 Third Ave. in Seattle, following the announcement that DocuSign would vacate the building by next July. This closure is part of a broader trend, as Starbucks has been undergoing significant store closures and layoffs, including the layoff of approximately 900 employees and the closure of at least 28 stores across Washington state. The company stated that these closures occur in locations where they cannot create the expected environment for customers and employees or where financial viability is lacking.

In addition to the downtown closure, Starbucks confirmed the shuttering of five additional locations in March. The company maintains that it continuously evaluates its coffeehouses to determine whether they meet community needs, which sometimes leads to closures in favor of strategic updates or new formats. This decision-making process is described as challenging but essential for focusing on core business strategies.

Starbucks is also expanding its corporate footprint by establishing a new office in Nashville, planning to relocate or recruit 2,000 employees over the next five years, which would exceed half of its current workforce in Seattle. Despite this shift, Starbucks has affirmed that Seattle will remain its North American and global headquarters.

Further layoffs ensued in May, affecting 61 corporate workers at headquarters, followed by another round that involved 300 corporate job cuts and the closure of several regional support offices. Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks, criticized the city of Seattle for being increasingly unwelcoming to businesses. He pointed out the city’s challenges, including homelessness and budget deficits, and cautioned that such an environment may deter future entrepreneurs and businesses from investing in Seattle.
