Starbucks' New ChatGPT Ordering Experience Has Not Necessarily Worked Out So Well – CoffeeTalk

Users have begun to share frustrations over the ordering process with Starbucks’ ChatGPT integration. Verge Editor David Pierce consistently orders a Venti iced coffee with light skim milk, a task that normally requires minimal effort through the Starbucks app. However, attempting to use the new ChatGPT feature proved cumbersome and time-consuming. The initial input, “order me a Venti iced coffee with light skim milk,” prompted ChatGPT to confirm the item and provide a description rather than directly placing the order. Pierce was then required to navigate a pop-up interface to customize the drink, which took longer than the traditional app method.

The issue compounded when trying to add a second order for a drink called “the fruity tea.” Instead of easily finding the Passion Tango Tea, ChatGPT suggested an incorrect alternative. As the process progressed, Pierce received notifications about nearing message limits and inaccurate location settings, complicating checkout further with store suggestions that were not nearby. Attempts to rectify these issues resulted in a downgrade to a less capable version of ChatGPT, stripping away features that could have facilitated ordering.

The app perhaps caters to a hypothetical user base that does not align with real consumer behavior, requiring too much verbal interaction for a simple transaction. Ordering coffee is fundamentally a transactional process rather than a creative one.
