National Latte Art Championship Winner Mohammad Afsar's Journey To The World Championship In Zurich – CoffeeTalk
Mohammad Afsar, a renowned coffee house owner and mentor in Noida, has been representing India at both the national and international levels of the National Latte Art Championship 2025. As the national Coffee mentor at Roastery Coffee House, Afsar encourages young baristas to pour their hearts into every cup, not just coffee but also their hearts. Winning the championship was not just about creating a perfect pour, but staying calm under pressure and expressing a deep message through art.
Afsar’s journey as a barista began in 2017 as a way to make ends meet, and he has since become passionate about coffee and hospitality. He believes that each cup he prepares not only sparked curiosity but also became a reason to keep learning. His willingness to learn and hands-on experience have made coffee and care a second nature, and they blend beautifully together.
Latte art requires practice, patience, and passion, and Afsar believes that young baristas should give themselves and their coffee time to brew. There is no limitation to the possibilities of latte art, and once a barista gains confidence, they can pour magic in every cup.
Afsar’s personal favorite latte art design is the skeleton head design, which he believes is unique and metaphorical in its message against conflict and nudges us towards humanity. This thought generates immense respect for life and every moment of it, keeping him humble and grounded.
The most challenging part of the National Latte Art Championship for Afsar was handling pressure while remaining consistent. He managed high expectations and ensured he performed well in the limited time provided, pushing himself harder with greater focus and control. His design was inspired by the current state of affairs around the world, reflecting upon the impact of destruction and loss of forests, marine life, and air quality.
Afsar balances creativity and technical precision when designing latte art under competition pressure by practicing until the technical parts feel smooth and then letting his ideas flow even when the pressure is high. His designs originate as a reaction to the present state of the world, with examples such as the roaring lion showing the anger animals feel towards the loss of their habitat, the ocean dragon capturing the hurt pollution caused to marine life, the unicorn standing for purity against worsening air quality, and the skull warning against ongoing human conflict amongst themselves and with nature.
As the National Coffee Mentor at Roastery Coffee House, Afsar supports and guides young baristas in their careers by giving them the required time and encouragement along with the creative freedom to pour not just coffee but their heart into every cup. He aims to pass on the same values of teamwork, persistence, and practice to future baristas.
With the World Championship in Zurich approaching, Afsar is preparing to compete on a global stage, focusing on presentation and art skills. He feels deeply honored to be representing India and Roastery Coffee House at the global level and wants to showcase the best of our brewing culture to the world.
