Local Coffee Roasters Reclaim Spaces Abandoned By Starbucks – CoffeeTalk

Starbucks has closed numerous locations in the Bay Area, paving the way for local coffee businesses. Ritual Coffee is opening its first new standalone café in San Francisco in a decade at 255 California St. in October. This 1,800-square-foot café will serve drip and espresso beverages, along with pastries and food offerings. The closure of Starbucks outlets, part of a billion-dollar restructuring initiative, has allowed local coffee companies such as Spro Coffee Lab and Andytown Coffee to occupy former Starbucks spaces, further highlighting a shift in the local coffee landscape.

Owner Eileen Rinaldi views this trend as an opportunity for community-focused businesses to thrive where national chains once dominated. Rinaldi has personal ties to the location, having started her coffee career there in 2003 while opening the first San Francisco café for Torrefazione Italia, a business later acquired by Starbucks. Returning to the Financial District as the founder of Ritual Coffee is a significant milestone for her.

Despite broader challenges such as rising coffee prices due to climate change and disease, as well as fluctuating tariffs affecting coffee imports, Rinaldi remains optimistic about Ritual’s growth. The café’s recent opening at the San Francisco International Airport and other locations shows its resilience, and Rinaldi believes that the energizing atmosphere of the Financial District will support its success. She hopes that once the new location is established, there will be potential for future expansion and a renewed focus on transitioning Ritual to worker ownership.
