Local Coffee Chains Keep Taking Over Former Starbucks Locations After Starbucks' Mass Closures – CoffeeTalk
A local coffee chain has taken over another vacant Starbucks location in Portland, following recent nationwide closures by the brand which surprised many, including local business owners. A notable closure included a Starbucks on the corner of Northeast 28th Avenue and Burnside Street, a site valued for its community aspect by Roseline Coffee’s co-owner, Keith Schuman.
After Starbucks announced the closure of 1% of its North American locations, Schuman quickly checked for affected Portland sites. The East Burnside Starbucks was notably one he hoped could remain open due to its vibrant surroundings. However, Roseline Coffee recently acquired this 2803 E. Burnside St. space, with plans to open by fall.
This acquisition is part of a trend of local coffee shops moving into former Starbucks locations, as evidenced by another local chain, Push Pull, which is set to open in a vacated Starbucks in Multnomah Village soon. Roseline Coffee, a specialty roaster established in 2012, already operates seven locations in the greater Portland area.
The new East Burnside cafe will measure 1,600 square feet, akin to Roseline’s other outlets, but each location will maintain a unique design that reflects its neighborhood. Schuman emphasized that getting the concept right on paper is crucial for the new cafe’s future realization.
Overall, this development highlights a shift in Portland’s coffee landscape, with local businesses stepping in to fill the gaps left by national chains.
