The evolution of home coffee brewing reflects significant technological transitions over the last century, beginning with basic methods like simmering pots and boiled water to the introduction of percolators and the automatic drip machine in the 1970s. A notable shift in the industry occurred with the launch of Keurig’s single-serve brewing system and K-Cups in 1998, which have since proliferated in various settings, including households and commercial venues.

Recently, Keurig has announced the upcoming release of the Keurig Alta system along with a new line of compostable K-Cup pods, called AltaRounds, set to be launched later this year. This new system aims to address environmental concerns by eliminating plastic and aluminum from its pods, instead opting for a plant-based coating that is fully compostable. The design process transitioned from an initial concept known as “K-Rounds” to the current design following several iterations.

The Alta system introduces significant advancements, such as the ability to brew espresso drinks alongside traditional drip coffee, marking a response to consumer demands for variety and quality in their coffee choices. Keurig’s President, Phil Drapeau, emphasized the company’s proactive approach to remain competitive and meet evolving consumer preferences, especially in light of growth stagnation during the mid-2010s.

The development of AltaRounds was characterized by extensive collaboration among engineering and product development teams, leading to the selection of an alginate coating derived from seaweed that allows for preservation and functionality. Testing involved experimenting with various shapes until a puck shape—a design conducive to brewing while maintaining a compact form factor—was finalized.

Keurig’s commitment to quality aligns with consumer trends favoring barista-style coffee that is easy to prepare. A significant investment has been made for the development of the Alta system, aiming to redefine home coffee consumption. Although transitioning from K-Cups to the new system may present challenges, the leadership team at Keurig is optimistic about the potential reception of Alta, aiming to enhance consumer experiences by prioritizing both taste and sustainability in coffee preparation.
