Employees at Discourse Coffee Workshop in Milwaukee voted to unionize, with management recognizing the union without a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election. The 23 employees will unite under the Milwaukee Area Service and Hospitality Workers Organization (MASH), which also represents unionized workers at nearby Anodyne Coffee and others. Founded in 2017 and relocated to Milwaukee in 2021, Discourse Coffee currently operates two locations in the city and a residency in Chicago, with the union specifically covering Milwaukee employees.

The union was recognized after over 70% of employees signed authorization cards. Ryan Castelaz, founder and CEO, emphasized that this recognition represents an commitment to open dialogue with employees and aims to enhance clarity, empowerment, equity, and pride among the workforce. Peter Rickman, MASH’s president, highlighted that the workers sought unionization to protect their working conditions and ensure their voices are heard.

Castelaz described how Discourse Coffee differentiates itself by integrating storytelling into its business model, using unique ingredients and approaches to engage customers. He and business partner Sean Liu, both experienced baristas, have a deep appreciation for the challenges faced by workers and are committed to maintaining worker welfare and equity at the core of their operations.

Unlike past unionization efforts in Milwaukee’s coffee industry, where leadership opposition did not facilitate negotiations, Discourse’s voluntary union recognition is anticipated to streamline the bargaining process. Rickman noted the importance of this collaborative approach and Castelaz expressed hope that Discourse could set a positive precedent for other businesses in their employee relations strategies.
