The Impact Of Tariffs On Hawaii Coffee Prices – CoffeeTalk

Experts have noted that tariffs have led to a 41% increase in prices over the past year, which has significant implications for the coffee industry. Following the Supreme Court’s decision to annul many of President Donald Trump’s broad tariffs, coffee businesses are cautiously optimistic about possible relief, although uncertainty remains as some import taxes may still be retained.

Local coffee shops have been managing the increased costs either by absorbing them or only minimally raising their prices. Specifically, businesses such as Common Ground at AC Hotel, which exclusively sells Hawaiian coffee, report that they have been less affected by tariffs. According to the hotel’s general manager, Stephen Hinck, local coffee prices have risen about 10% from the previous year, but he has opted not to transfer these costs onto customers, as there is a strong demand for local, homegrown coffee among patrons.

In contrast, coffee shops that deal with imported beans face significant tariff impacts. Tariff rates vary significantly, with up to 50% on coffee from Brazil, which represents a substantial portion of the global coffee supply, and 20% on beans from countries like Vietnam and Nicaragua. Local Hawaiian coffee commands a higher price, sometimes reaching up to $25 a pound, which positions it differently in the market compared to commoditized coffee that averages around $9 a pound.

Brian Kubicki, the senior VP and managing director of Kauai Coffee Company, which is the largest coffee producer in the U.S., pointed out that land and labor costs pose more significant challenges than tariffs themselves. Kauai Coffee Company is currently in negotiations regarding its lease, which is set to expire at the end of March, highlighting the precarious nature of their operations and employment of over 140 staff members. Kubicki expressed determination to negotiate effectively, ensuring that the company does not intend to cease operations despite the challenges faced.
