Kona Coffee Theft Sees Concerning Escalation in Hawaii – CoffeeTalk
In recent years, the issue of theft involving Kona coffee, a premium product from Hawaii, has escalated, compelling retailers to take protective measures such as locking these items behind plexiglass. The price of Kona coffee has significantly increased, with bags now costing between $20 to $30, which has led to an uptick in thefts. Mitchell Kimura, a part-time worker at a coffee company, observes that the once-moderate thefts have grown in frequency and scale as the price has risen, making the coffee an attractive target for opportunistic thieves.
John McCarthy, a retired deputy police chief in Honolulu, notes that merchants often display coffee openly to attract customers while inadvertently exposing themselves to theft, which criminals exploit. The rising costs of securing items with additional staff or technology place additional strain on retailers, who typically operate on thin profit margins, according to Dave Erdman, the interim president of the Retail Merchants of Hawaii.
The motivations behind the thefts are not personal consumption but rather resale. McCarthy explains that the stolen coffee often reaches middlemen who then resell it, generating profit from what was taken for free. Similar cases have been reported with other high-value items such as SPAM, macadamia nuts, and luxury shampoos. The legal ramifications for thieves are also minimal; theft of merchandise valued under $750 is classified as a misdemeanor, further emboldening wrongdoers.
Witnessing theft in action, McCarthy emphasizes the audacity of thieves who often confront employees with a defiant attitude, fully aware that there are negligible consequences for their actions. As a result, consumers are advised to be cautious about significantly discounted coffee sold in unfamiliar settings, as it may be stolen merchandise. Kimura underlines the importance of consumer vigilance, urging people not to support the ongoing issue of theft by purchasing suspiciously cheap products.
