Black Market Coffee launches Blueprint for independent café owners – BeanScene
Independent, family-owned specialty coffee business Black Market Coffee is expanding its support for Australia’s independent café sector with the launch of Blueprint, a 10-week business coaching program designed to help café owners improve profitability, streamline operations and build more sustainable businesses.
Developed by founders Jess Hol and Angus Nicol, Blueprint draws on 30 years of combined hospitality experience and firsthand knowledge gained from operating seven hospitality venues.
The program aims to help independent café owners better understand their financial performance, identify opportunities to improve margins, strengthen their teams and take greater control of their operations.
The initiative comes as rising operating costs and ongoing margin pressures continue to challenge independent hospitality businesses, with many café owners working increasingly long hours without necessarily achieving sustainable financial returns.
Jess says one of the most common misconceptions in the café industry is that a busy venue is automatically a profitable one.
“A café can be absolutely pumping, with a queue out the door every weekend, and the owner can still be barely paying themselves,” she says. “Being busy doesn’t always mean being profitable.”
Delivered over 10 weeks, Blueprint provides practical business coaching to help owners assess how their cafés are performing, identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to build stronger, more profitable operations.
Angus says café ownership should deliver more than just a livelihood, providing operators with both financial stability and a sustainable work-life balance.
“We believe owning a café should be rewarding, both financially and personally,” he says. “Hospitality has this culture where working ridiculous hours is almost a badge of honour. You shouldn’t have to do absolutely everything yourself to make your business work.”
Blueprint forms part of Black Market Coffee’s broader commitment to supporting independent café operators beyond the supply of specialty coffee.
The Sydney-based business operates a full-service wholesale model, offering freshly roasted specialty coffee alongside coffee equipment, barista training, ongoing operational support and industry expertise.
Through Black Market Training, it also provides practical hospitality education to help individuals and teams develop the skills and confidence to deliver consistent customer experiences.
Having experienced the realities of café ownership firsthand, Jess and Angus established Black Market Coffee with the belief that a successful wholesale partnership should extend beyond product supply to provide meaningful support for the businesses they work with.
“We’ve been in our customers’ shoes,” Jess says. “We know what it’s like to run a busy café, manage a team, deal with suppliers and try to make the numbers work. We also know how much difference having the right people in your corner can make.”
Black Market Coffee is also the official coffee partner of the Australian Restaurant & Cafe Association (ARCA), further strengthening its involvement in and commitment to Australia’s independent hospitality industry.
“Our mission is to help more café owners build businesses that thrive, not just survive,” Jess says. “There’s no shortage of passion or hardworking people in hospitality. Sometimes they just need the right tools, knowledge and support to turn that hard work into a great business.”
