Brazil's Instant Coffee Granted Exemption from New 25% US Tariff – CoffeeTalk
Brazil’s instant coffee has been granted exemption from a new 25% U.S. tariff on Brazilian imports, a significant relief for the industry that has historically faced such duties. This tariff relief is especially crucial, as it safeguards an estimated $2 billion to $2.5 billion in annual Brazilian coffee exports to the United States, according to data from the Brazilian coffee exporters group, Cecafe.
Despite previous tariff revocations by the Trump administration on most Brazilian products—including green coffee beans and flavored instant varieties—in 2025, instant coffee remained uniquely taxed. This led to a dramatic drop in Brazilian instant coffee exports to the U.S., plummeting nearly 30% compared to the prior year as reported by the Brazilian Instant Coffee Industry Association (Abics).
The newly secured exemption reflects the collaborative efforts of Cecafe and the U.S. National Coffee Association, as noted by Cecafe’s director general, Marcos Matos. The move is seen as a critical step for the Brazilian coffee sector, particularly for instant coffee producers who have faced economic challenges due to the tariffs.
