Barcelona International Terminal (BIT), in collaboration with SGS and Masiques, is set to develop a state-of-the-art coffee terminal in the Port of Barcelona, marking a significant investment of €30 million—€20 million from the Barcelona Free Zone Consortium (CZFB) and €10 million from the Port of Barcelona. This ambitious project will take place on a 53,380 m² site in section VI of Ronda del Port, under a 50-year concession granted by the CZFB.

The new terminal will feature two interconnected warehouses beneath a canopy, alongside offices and designated truck loading/unloading areas, encompassing a total built-up area of 27,477 m². To ensure optimal conditions for green coffee beans, the terminal will incorporate advanced solar thermal and photovoltaic systems, along with precise temperature and humidity controls.

Construction is projected to span 36 months, after which the terminal is expected to double the existing production capacity through the use of fully automated, modern equipment, while also maintaining BIT’s status as a Customs Free Zone. José Alberto Carbonell, president of the Port of Barcelona, remarked that the development will enhance BIT’s leadership position in southern Europe and promote institutional collaboration. Pere Navarro, the Spanish Government’s special delegate to the CZFB, emphasized the project’s potential for economic growth and job creation.

Currently, BIT manages approximately 80% of Spain’s green coffee imports, reinforcing Barcelona’s role as the primary southern European entry point for coffee. The expansion of the terminal is a strategic response to the growth of agro-industrial company Elian and is designed to provide sustainable logistics solutions that will benefit the coffee industry well into the future.
