The Tech YouTuber Who Opened A Coffee Shop – CoffeeTalk
David Cogen, a YouTuber and creator, has been living a double life for the past eight months. He is a YouTuber and creator, known for his work on TheUnlockr, reviewing phones, testing ebikes, and explaining how food smokers work. In addition to his day-to-day activities, Cogen is also a coffee shop entrepreneur, working to open Coffee Check in Brooklyn.
Cogen started his coffee shop business after his previous lease ended and decided to repurpose his new workspace into a coffee roastery. He discovered that there was a front door to the street, so he decided to open a cafe as well. Coffee Check has been open since late August, and it is an impressively busy space with outlets everywhere, fast Wi-Fi, and smart lighting setups.
Cogen offers tours of the coffee shop, including a fully functional production studio that other creators and companies can rent on Peerspace. He is particularly excited about the kitchen, which is easy to remove and add appliances for kitchen gadget reviews on YouTube. A bunch of e-bikes and a Samsung TV are also present in the corner.
Cogen also has a podcast studio, a large booth with a couch and two chairs that he got from Finland and used as the company’s New York showroom. This is the second in a two-part miniseries called “How to Make It in the Future.”
Cogen has spent time thinking about the mix of content and coffee in his life going forward. After 13 years of living the always-on creator life, there is something romantic and slower about running a local business. He has also spent years filming his coffee for his videos, questioning whether he aspires to be a coffee YouTuber and if making content about his business without changing the purpose of the thing he created. Cogen is wrestling with the same issues every creator deals with, and he has put his money and time into trying to make it better.
