Starbucks Baristas May Plan Nationwide Strike Around Upcoming Red Cup Day – CoffeeTalk

Starbucks baristas at unionized locations across the United States are currently engaged in a strike authorization vote organized by Starbucks Workers United, which commenced on October 24 and is set to conclude in early November. This movement was initiated following stalled contract negotiations, wherein the union has raised concerns about staffing, compensation, and various alleged unfair labor practices. To garner support for a potential strike, the union has organized 70 rallies and picketing events in 60 cities nationwide from October 24 to November 2.

Amidst this backdrop, Starbucks has announced plans to close approximately 500 stores, which includes 59 unionized locations, and to lay off around 900 employees as part of a restructuring strategy led by CEO Brian Niccol. While the company claims it is open to negotiations and emphasizes that it offers competitive retail employment with an average hourly compensation exceeding $30 in combined pay and benefits, it contends that the union has halted discussions prematurely.

There is speculation that any upcoming strikes could coincide with Red Cup Day, a significant annual event celebrated by Starbucks, marking the unofficial beginning of the holiday season. On this day, customers who purchase holiday drinks receive a complimentary limited-edition reusable red holiday cup, making it a highly anticipated occasion for both the brand and its customers.
