QuikTrip, an Oklahoma-based gas station convenience chain, has transformed its coffee offerings over the past 18 months in response to the rising quality and accessibility of coffee. Ryan Boone, QuikTrip’s corporate chef, highlighted the need to enhance their coffee experience: “Better and better coffee was becoming widely available and more convenient. It was time to level up our game.” The new system includes 12 self-serve taps that provide a variety of high-quality caffeinated beverages such as cold brew, hot chocolate, and flavored lattes, which feature real milk and coffee at optimal temperatures—a detail Boone has chosen to keep confidential regarding the preparation process.

All brewed coffee is crafted from freshly ground beans sourced from prominent coffee-growing regions in Central America, achieving what Boone describes as a balance between “zippy and broody.” Since the taps’ installation across 1,200 QuikTrip locations in 21 states, customers have shown such enthusiasm that some taps were damaged due to overzealous use, prompting the company to reinforce them for durability.

This initiative is merely the beginning of a broader self-service beverage program aimed at positioning QuikTrip’s offerings on par with those of restaurants and coffee shops while retaining the convenience of a gas station experience. Future plans involve installing advanced tea brewers that deliver precise temperatures, along with upgrades to current soda and frozen beverage dispensers, allowing even smaller locations to present a wider array of flavors. Boone asserts that any entity selling coffee becomes a competitor in their eyes, emphasizing the chain’s commitment to improving its beverage program.
