Some Trader Joe’s coffee drinkers have expressed dissatisfaction after a recent class-action lawsuit was initiated against the retailer in California. The lawsuit alleges that Trader Joe’s misrepresented its French Roast Low Acid whole bean coffee, leading customers to believe it contained a higher caffeine content than it actually does. Four plaintiffs, who purchased this coffee product, contend that the grocer did not disclose that it had less caffeine compared to standard coffee options.

The plaintiffs’ attorneys argue that common industry practice dictates that coffee products should indicate their caffeine content when any processing reduces it. They note that fully caffeinated coffees do not require special labeling, unlike decaffeinated or half-caffeinated products. According to the lawsuit, testing has revealed that the French Roast Low Acid coffee contains only half the caffeine of a typical blend, yet this was not properly communicated on the packaging, prompting consumers to purchase it under the false belief that it was fully caffeinated.

The lawsuit emphasizes the vital role caffeine plays in consumers’ daily lives, suggesting that coffee drinkers depend on caffeine for energy, which significantly influences their purchasing decisions. A product with low caffeine would not meet the needs of habitual coffee consumers, who would expect a price reduction for such a blend.
