Uganda’s coffee industry, which relies on 1.8 million smallholders, faces challenges from droughts, rain, and pests. Arabica and Robusta coffee are at risk due to their need for stable temperatures. Liberica, a wild type of coffee, appears more climate-resilient and resistant to pests. However, not everyone is convinced by its taste. More work is needed to improve cultivation and processing. In Ecuador, a cooperative is growing coffee under the shade of other trees, known as agroforestry, to help future-proof coffee production. Germany’s coffee roasting companies are increasingly interested in alternative cultivation methods. The industry is evolving due to resilient bean varieties, sustainable cultivation, and fairer trade conditions.
