New Survey Reveals At-Home Coffee Consumption At Highest Rate In 14 Years – CoffeeTalk
Remote working and the necessity to economize have contributed to a significant increase in coffee consumption at home in the United States, marking a departure from the pre-pandemic trend favoring café consumption. According to a recent survey by the U.S. National Coffee Association (NCA), 85% of respondents reported drinking coffee at home, the highest percentage since 2012.
The survey highlighted that among those who consumed coffee outside their homes, most did so in their offices or while commuting, with only a small percentage visiting coffee shops. Two primary factors are driving this shift towards home consumption: the hybrid work model, which reduces commuting, and the economic pressures facing certain segments of the population. Gerd Müller-Pfeiffer, an industry adviser and former Nestle executive, noted that advancements in home coffee brewing equipment have also played a crucial role, allowing consumers to achieve café-quality coffee at home.
Despite the changes in consumption patterns, overall coffee consumption among U.S. adults remained stable, with 66% of respondents indicating they had consumed coffee in the past day, surpassing the consumption rates of all other beverages, including bottled water. U.S. coffee drinkers, on average, consume 2.8 cups daily, contributing to a staggering total of over 500 million cups served each day across the country. Furthermore, coffee prices in the U.S. are elevated due to production shortfalls in key coffee-exporting nations, leading to historically high prices, which continues to impact consumer behavior.
