Flooding In Colombia Leads To Road Closures In Key Coffee Regions – CoffeeTalk

Torrential rains have caused significant disruptions across Colombia, particularly affecting the country’s coffee and cocoa production regions. The Ministry of Transportation reported complete road closures on 11 routes and partial closures with single-lane traffic on 21 roads, primarily due to landslides, flooding, and structural failures of bridges. The provinces of Antioquia, Córdoba, Magdalena, and Nariño have experienced the most severe damage, leading to the total suspension of vehicular traffic in several areas.

Key incidents include the total closure of the Santuario-Caño Alegre road in Antioquia, significantly affected by a large landslide. In the Urabá Region, the Necoclí-Arboletes route is also completely closed following the Mulatos River overflowing and damaging bridge structures; this region is noted for its cocoa production. Additionally, structural damage to a bridge abutment has resulted in the closure of the Arboletes-San Juan de Urabá road. In Nariño, the roadbed on the critical Rumichaca-Pasto route has completely failed, causing a total road closure. Landslides and accessibility issues are also reported in the cocoa-producing province of Santander and the coffee-producing provinces of Risaralda, Casanare, Meta, and further areas of Antioquia, resulting in 21 roads being partially closed due to rockfalls, soil erosion, and partial loss of the roadbed.

The torrential rains, particularly observed in January and February, have heavily impacted coffee production. The excessive rainfall has disrupted the flowering stage of coffee plants, vital for estimating the main harvest expected in the last quarter of the year. Major coffee-growing departments such as Huila, Antioquia, and Cauca are facing adverse conditions, with Huila reporting rainfall totals reaching 200 millimeters, which critically affects the coffee plantations and, consequently, the overall production forecast for the year.
