What is Cloud Coffee? Introducing TikTok's latest trend – BeanScene

Another month means another viral coffee trend transcending the online world and ending up on the menu of our favourite cafés, and the latest drink to take over TikTok is the Cloud Coffee.

What is Cloud Coffee?

The fervour for chilled foam continues and the Cloud Coffee is the next generation of the signature drinks trend. The base of this concoction is coconut water over ice, with a layer of espresso whipped with milk or a plant-based alternative on top. Baristas can add their own spin by blending complementary flavours into the whipped coffee layer.

Who created the Cloud Coffee?

It’s not immediately clear who came up with the Cloud Coffee, but it’s a variation of the Dalgona, or whipped coffee, which was created in Busan, Korea, in the 1960s. The Dalgona coffee rose to fame in 2020, gaining popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Where can you try Cloud Coffee?

Cloud Coffees are popping up on menus right across Australia. At Jackson Dodds Cafe in Preston, Melbourne, the team have blended two viral trends in the creation of the Matcha Cloud, which sees matcha replace espresso in the cloud component.

In Sydney, Kissaten has fashioned a Black Sesame Cloud, which the baristas describe as “created with an attempt to blur the boundaries between rising specialty coffee culture and sweet coffee variations”.

Even café group The Coffee Club is getting in on the action. In May, the brand released the Choc-Pistachio Cloud Iced Latte and the Pistachio Cloud Iced Latte, also leaning into the Dubai chocolate obsession that’s been sweeping social media.
