ProfilePrint Rolls Out Smaller Scale AI-Based Coffee Quality Assessment Tool Mini Beluga – CoffeeTalk
ProfilePrint, founded by CEO Alan Lai and based in Singapore, specializes in AI-powered quality assessment tools for the coffee industry. Its product line has evolved from the earlier Beluga and Orca models, primarily designed for enterprise and lab-based use, to the recent Mini Beluga, which is smaller, lighter, and more affordable. Marketing head Nicolette Yeo emphasized that the Mini Beluga aims to lower barriers for smaller businesses across the coffee value chain by providing curated AI tools that offer high-quality data without unnecessary complexity.
The Mini Beluga is designed to be user-friendly and portable, measuring approximately 21 centimeters in height and weighing around 1.3 kilograms, allowing it to be used easily on farms, in factories, or warehouses. This move is part of a broader strategy to democratize access to quality assessment tools for smaller coffee producers, cooperatives, traders, and roasters. Yeo noted that there has been a consistent demand from prospects for more affordable and portable solutions that empower smaller players in the market to make informed decisions about coffee quality.
ProfilePrint’s initiative also seeks to address the quality misalignment prevalent in coffee supply chains, where perceptions of quality can vary significantly among individuals. The Mini Beluga helps mitigate these discrepancies by allowing both sellers and buyers to evaluate coffee quality using standardized parameters, thereby enhancing transparency and trust within the supply chain. This device offers producers the capability to objectively profile their beans before sale, while buyers can verify incoming shipments.
Importantly, Yeo clarified that while the Mini Beluga employs AI, it is intended to assist human decision-making rather than replace it. The tool does not dictate quality judgments but provides consistent assessments that help users make informed decisions. ProfilePrint will focus its efforts on the coffee sector, where the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) scoring framework is already established and well-understood, facilitating a clear reference point for quality evaluation within the industry.
