Podback has installed its 200th drop-off point at local authority household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) across the UK, enabling 30% of households to recycle used coffee pods at their facilities. The recycling service has partnered with Bristol Waste to establish drop-off points at three recycling centres in St Philip’s, Hartcliffe Way, and Avonmouth. The sites are operational, with awareness campaigns and free collection caddies offered to initial users. Podback’s Executive Director, Rick Hindley, said the installation is a significant milestone in the expansion of its nationwide drop-off network.

The collection system at HWRCs differs from other Podback services, allowing users to deposit aluminium and plastic pods loose into designated containers. The service typically takes six weeks to establish. Supermarket partnerships provide additional collection infrastructure, with the roll-out of drop-off points across over 400 Morrisons stores nearing completion. A partnership with Asda has resulted in approximately 44,000 collection bags being returned through the retailer’s toYou parcel service during the first quarter of operation.

Consumers can identify their nearest collection point using the online Recycle Checker and interactive map on the Podback website. Plastic and aluminium pods are recycled within the UK, with the coffee grounds undergoing anaerobic digestion to produce renewable energy and soil improver.
