Starbucks is planning to implement personalized digital menus at drive-thrus, as announced by CEO Brian Niccol during a recent earnings call. The initiative aims to enhance customer experience by recognizing arriving customers and presenting tailored menu options, alongside facilitating easier payment processes. This approach parallels similar technological developments by other fast-food chains like Taco Bell, which is experimenting with dynamic digital menu displays that adapt based on individual cars, and McDonald’s, which is piloting an AI-driven chatbot, “ArchIQ”, to identify returning customers for streamlined ordering.

Further innovations from Starbucks include the introduction of background AI models by 2027 aimed at improving order accuracy and efficiency for baristas at drive-thrus. The company plans to enhance its app capabilities with AI, potentially enabling conversational ordering in future iterations. Additionally, Starbucks has already integrated AI by allowing orders via ChatGPT and providing staff with an AI tool named Green Dot Assist for answering queries related to recipes and service protocols.

While the timeline for personalized digital menus remains uncertain, Niccol emphasized that the company is in the early stages of testing these technologies, with a commitment to learn and scale successful initiatives.
