Survey Shows Consumers Prioritize Recyclability in Coffee Capsule Choices, but Still Want Quality and Convenience – CoffeeTalk
A survey involving 2,565 coffee capsule buyers from France, Italy, Spain, and the UK revealed that 34% of consumers prioritize recyclability when selecting a capsule type, with an additional 30% indicating it influences their choice. However, the data indicate that coffee brands and packaging manufacturers must address factors beyond environmental credentials. Specifically, consumers also link packaging materials to perceptions of quality, value for money, and ease of use.
The findings show that consumers regard aluminium and plastic capsules as similarly recyclable, with 60% believing that aluminium is easy to process in their area, compared to 57% for plastic. Nonetheless, over 25% of participants described the recycling or disposal process as complicated, with 27% for aluminium and 28% for plastic capsules expressing this sentiment. Importantly, these perceptions may not accurately represent the actual collection, sorting, and recycling practices, suggesting that clearer recycling guidance—including on-pack QR codes linking to local recycling information—might ameliorate the existing gaps.
Environmental factors heavily influence material preferences; 47% of aluminium capsule supporters cite these benefits as their reasoning, while 39% of plastic users do likewise. Further, with new EU regulations—specifically the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)—mandating at least 10% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content in polypropylene food-contact packaging by 2030, coffee brands face the challenge of aligning their packaging strategies with these regulatory expectations alongside consumer insights.
The research also indicates that the choice of capsule material impacts perceived quality. Notably, 60% of respondents associate aluminium capsules with superior coffee quality, compared to 17% for plastic. Additionally, 77% believe the material impacts coffee taste, with 40% of aluminium capsule enthusiasts citing taste and aroma preservation as crucial to their preference. This underscores the critical need for manufacturers to grasp how packaging affects product quality and consumer perception.
While aluminium capsules excel in conveying a premium image, plastic capsules have their advantages, notably affordability and convenience. Among plastic capsule users, 56% highlight better value for money, whereas 50% appreciate their greater availability. Ease of use is also a significant factor for 30% of plastic capsule consumers.
Overall, the data suggest that coffee brands and packaging suppliers must achieve a balance among recyclability, perceived quality, affordability, and convenience, since benefits in one area do not necessarily translate to another. As Sarah Neerkorn, senior market insights manager at Amcor, notes, understanding the comprehensive needs of consumers is essential. Brands can distinguish themselves by harmonizing their packaging with consumer priorities, particularly as the PPWR evolves. The selection of suitable packaging will be pivotal in meeting both sustainability goals and customer expectations.
