Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi-based global investor, has made a substantial investment of US$1 billion in Luckin Coffee, recognizing the burgeoning coffee market in China. The investment is characterized as a “significant minority investment” and is executed in collaboration with Centurium Capital, which is the controlling shareholder of Luckin Coffee.

Founded in 2017 in Beijing, Luckin Coffee operates a rapidly growing network of 36,000 stores spanning China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and the US, providing an array of affordable coffee, tea, and food options. The company is particularly known for its technological innovations that enhance customer experience through data-driven strategies in customer engagement, product development, and store operations.

This investment comes at a time when China’s coffee market is witnessing significant growth, largely due to increasing consumer preference for freshly brewed coffee and a rise in consumption frequency among existing coffee drinkers. Mohamed Albadr, the Head of Asia, Private Equity at Mubadala, noted the attractive long-term prospects within the consumer sector in China. He emphasized Luckin Coffee’s distinctive, tech-enabled business model, which enables rapid responses to shifts in consumer preferences.

Mubadala plans to foster a robust partnership with Centurium to bolster Luckin Coffee’s next phase of growth, both domestically and internationally. Michael Chen, a partner at Centurium Capital, expressed optimism regarding Mubadala’s expertise and global network, which are anticipated to enhance Luckin Coffee’s innovation and long-term growth trajectory.

Mubadala manages a vast portfolio valued at US$385 billion, diversified across six continents and various sectors. Conversely, Centurium Capital, established in 2017, currently oversees approximately US$7 billion in assets, with a focus on the consumer, healthcare, and technology fields in China.
