One in four Aussies giving up takeaway coffee, survey reveals – BeanScene
A new survey from financial comparison site Canstar suggests one in four Australians have stopped buying takeaway coffee amid heightened cost-of-living pressures.
The survey of 2100 people found 29 per cent had stopped purchasing coffee from cafés and instead make it at home, with 19 per cent purchasing a coffee machine to do so.
Of those surveyed, 27 per cent said they preferred coffee brewed at home to coffee from a café. However, respondents reported buying an average of four takeaway coffees per week. The average price paid was $5.90.
Eden Radford, Canstar Consumer Expert, says the slowly rising price of coffee is becoming more noticeable in consumers’ household budgets.
“However, Aussies aren’t giving up their daily caffeine hit, they’re getting smarter about where they get it instead,” says Eden.
“Cost of living pressures are having an impact on household coffee habits, as Canstar’s survey shows that nearly three in ten Australians have completely ditched the café run to make their coffee at home instead.”
In the company’s 2026 Most Satisfied Customers Awards for Coffee, budget supermarket ALDI took the top spot in all three categories. Its Lazio range topped the Beans category, followed by Campos, Lavazza, and Urban Coffee Culture.
In the Pods category, ALDI’s Expressi range beat Nescafé, Nespresso, and Starbucks, while in the Instant category its Alcafe product pipped Nestlé, Coles, and Nescafé to the post.
“ALDI’s clean sweep across beans, pods, and instant coffee proves that budget-friendly doesn’t mean compromising on quality. While value for money and taste dominated customer satisfaction for pods and instant coffee, our analysis shows bean drinkers prioritised roast accuracy above all else,” says Eden.
“Whether swapping café visits for home brews to save money, or simply adding a home brew option to the daily routine, the takeaway is simple: taking control of your daily brew and shopping around for value can still save you money without giving up your favourite hot drink.”
