Costa Rica is Processing its Coffee Waste into High-Energy Fuel and Biochar Instead of Letting it Contribute to Global Emissions – CoffeeTalk
Costa Rica is pioneering the conversion of agricultural waste, particularly from pineapple and coffee, into syngas, a move designed to address global decarbonization goals. Nations are grappling with the need for stringent climate regulations as sectors like agriculture remain significant producers of greenhouse gases. The challenge lies in agriculture’s unique structural impediments that differ from those facing industrial sectors, as emissions arise from extensive biological processes over large areas. Particularly, potent greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide contribute substantially to climate change, with agrifood systems accounting for approximately 33% of global greenhouse emissions, mainly due to improper waste management.
The feedback loop created between agricultural practices and climate change directly threatens food security by reducing crop yields and degrading soil fertility, compelling farmers to further increase waste production and chemical dependency. In response to this crisis, Poás Bioenergy has developed innovative technology to transform agricultural waste directly at processing locations in Costa Rica, thus mitigating methane emissions and generating syngas as a valuable product.
The process involves removing excess moisture from the waste, followed by a thermal conversion in an oxygen-limited gasification reactor. This method not only produces high-density syngas for on-site energy needs, replacing fossil fuels, but also generates biochar, which improves soil health when buried. This circular economic model turns agricultural waste from a liability into an asset, enabling small-scale farmers to engage in carbon markets. The Carbon Positive project, expected to expand throughout Latin America, aims to set a global standard for converting agricultural waste into long-term carbon sinks, signifying a robust strategy to combat climate change while enhancing environmental and economic sustainability.
