Ugandan Coffee Exports See 59% Surge On September Bumper Crop – CoffeeTalk
Uganda’s coffee exports saw a remarkable increase of 59% in September year-on-year, driven by a robust crop yield in the East African nation, as reported by the agriculture ministry. In total, Uganda, known as Africa’s largest coffee exporter, shipped 844,949 60-kg bags of coffee during the month. This figure represents a significant rise from the 532,212 bags exported in the same month the previous year. The increase is attributed to improved coffee production, with a particularly strong harvest reported in the Central and Eastern regions.
Additionally, the agriculture ministry forecasts that coffee production will rise by 15% for the crop year commencing in October. Coffee, alongside gold, stands as one of Uganda’s key sources of foreign exchange, contributing significantly to the economy. Over the last 12 months leading up to September, Uganda generated $2.2 billion from coffee exports, marking a 57% increase compared to the previous year. This information highlights the vital role of the coffee sector in Uganda’s agricultural landscape and overall economic health.
