Cameroon Launches Campaign To Prepare Coffee Farmers For EUDR – CoffeeTalk
Cameroon’s Cocoa and Coffee Interprofessional Council (CICC) has launched a national awareness campaign to inform cocoa and coffee producers about the European Union Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR), which prohibits the import and sale of products linked to deforestation. The EUDR covers seven agricultural products and their derivatives, including cocoa, coffee, rubber, palm oil, soy, beef, and timber. The campaign aims to explain the regulation’s content to producers and emphasize compliance, as 78% of Cameroon’s cocoa exports and 68% of its coffee exports are destined for the European market.
To access the European market from January 1, 2026, EUDR-regulated products must comply with their country of origin’s legislation and be accompanied by a due diligence statement submitted through an information system established by the European Commission. Products exported to the EU must specifically be certified as “deforestation-free.”
To help producers and buyers meet the EUDR requirement, the CICC signed an agreement in Yaoundé on August 28, 2024, to pool georeferenced data for cocoa and coffee plots. The agreement involves six cocoa exporters and will create a centralized data platform that provides mapping to ensure products meet European sustainability standards. This initiative aims to protect small producers who might otherwise be penalized by the new requirements due to associated costs.
