Researchers at the University of Waterloo have developed a technology that allows users to use their feet to control an augmented reality (AR) device. The technology uses “gait gestures” to enable users to sidestep, take long strides, and drag their feet to control the device. The idea was sparked by waterloo professor Daniel Vogel, who had to stop and use his cold fingers to get a coffee on a walk. The researchers gathered a group of people to study leg movements that were easy enough to do while walking but distinct enough to show up as inputs on the AR device. When paired with an AR headset, users can control menus, change music, or answer calls. Although the technology is still a ways away from widespread use, the researchers believe it has legs.
