UK Coffee Pod Recycling Program Expands Following Successful Trial – CoffeeTalk

Co-op is significantly expanding its coffee pod recycling collaboration with Podback, growing the initiative to over 200 stores in the south-west of England and South Wales after a successful six-month trial. During the initial trial, which began in November 2025 involving 30 Co-op locations, more than 500,000 used coffee pods were recycled, amounting to approximately eight tonnes.

The expansion will introduce dedicated Podback recycling points in additional stores, offering consumers a convenient way to return used pods as part of their shopping experience. This initiative is aligned with Co-op’s commitment to sustainability, as demonstrated in its ‘sustainability showcase stores’, such as the one in Attleborough, Norfolk, which serve to pilot and showcase eco-friendly technologies and initiatives.

Rick Hindley, Podback’s executive director, emphasized the importance of this expansion in making coffee pod recycling more accessible, stating it would enhance the national drop-off network and enable local residents to recycle more easily. Scott McHarg, the head of sustainability at Co-op, highlighted the retailer’s objective to enable sustainable choices for customers and communities, indicating the store’s broader role beyond mere retail.

The Podback service, which operates as a not-for-profit, accepts both plastic and aluminium pods from member brands and has established over 1,500 retail drop-off locations along with more than 300 local authority recycling centers within the UK. After collection, the pods are processed by UK-based re-processors for recycling, while the coffee grounds are transformed into renewable energy and agricultural soil improver, thereby contributing positively to environmental sustainability.
