At Stockholm’s Andon Café, the San Francisco-based startup Andon Labs has implemented an AI agent named “Mona,” powered by Google’s Gemini, to handle various operational tasks within the café, excluding the actual preparation and serving of coffee. This innovative venture is still in its experimental phase, with sales surpassing $5,700 since its opening in mid-April; however, the profitability remains uncertain as less than $5,000 is left from an initial budget exceeding $21,000, much of which was consumed by setup costs.

Patrons have found the experience amusing, interacting with the AI through a telephone inside the café. Experts raise ethical concerns regarding AI’s responsibilities, particularly about potential repercussions, such as liability in cases of customer harm, highlighting a need for a solid organizational infrastructure to mitigate negative impacts on society and business.

Founded in 2023, Andon Labs focuses on “stress-testing” AI in real-world scenarios. Their efforts involve collaborations with major AI developers including OpenAI and Google DeepMind, aiming to prepare for a future where AI autonomously manages organizations. This café serves as a “controlled experiment” to study the ethical ramifications of AI in employment and business operations.

Mona employs various strategies for operational management, including setting up contracts for utilities and staff recruitment via platforms like LinkedIn. However, it has faced challenges in inventory management, issuing absurd orders such as 6,000 napkins and unnecessary items, indicating limitations in its contextual memory. Baristas, like Kajetan Grzelczak, express no immediate concerns about AI replacing their jobs, suggesting that middle management may be more vulnerable to such disruptions.
